Ho : These photos are from Ho and the surrounding area, where I spent the first two weeks of the trip living with a small family. Ho is in the Volta region of Ghana, which is in the southeastern-most part of the country, east of Lake Volta. The Volta region is mostly farmland and lush forests, and is somewhat isolated from the rest of Ghana by the man-made Lake Volta to the west. Ho is the region's capitol, more of a big town than a small city, with a very friendly atmosphere and a strong entrepreneurial spirit. It is not a wealthy area, even by Ghanaian standards, but the people are spirited, vibrant, and proud of their community. As a white traveller in this area with very little tourism, I stuck out like an elephant in a church, but I almost always felt welcomed by the people I met.

Livingstone/Victoria Falls : Livingstone is in Zambia, and is the heart of Zambian tourism surrounding Victoria Falls. When I visited, the dry season was near it's end, which means very low water. At the end of the rainy season, the entire ridge you see in the photos would be covered with torrents of water! In order to avoid a poorly-timed and sweltering 6-hour bus-ride back to Lusaka, we opted to take a charter flight. The plane was probably more sweltering than the bus, but only until we were airborne, and the view was fanatastic!

Mozi Oa Tunya Nat. Park, Zambia : This park, situated right by Livinstone, is home to many animals, including the only five white rhinos in all of Zambia. There are plenty of elephants, but we didn't see them, only the destruction they inflict upon the trees when they knock them down to chew the bark.

Soweto, South Africa : While in Johannesburg, I was warned over and over not to walk around with a camera, so unfortunately, I have few pictures from around the city. However, I did tour one of the historic townships near Joburg called Soweto, for South West Township. While the business of offering the tours gets mixed reactions, I knew, with only two days in the area, I wouldn't otherwise get a good insight to the character of a city that was until about 12 years ago ruthlessly segregated by law, and remains so to a large degree, though things are changing. Soweto was a township built by the minority White government in the '30s as a place to keep all the Black people, where they'd have easy access to the factories and mines, but otherwise be out of the way of the White suburbs to the north of the city. It has evolved from a dispairing slum into a spirited and vibrant community, and was a hotbed of political action towards ending the apartheid regime.
